Photovoltaics Research Group facilities:

The PVRG has three facilities that are equipped with state-of-the-art research equipment for students to conduct their research or gain practical experience.

PV INDOOR LABORATORY (PV LAB):

Equipped with advance characterisation tools for in-depth studies on PV cells and modules.

OUTDOOR RESEARCH FACILITY (ORF):

Is used to conduct research on PV modules exposed to environmental conditions. With this facility we have the capability to fully evaluate and characterise PV modules of different cell and module technologies, thereby providing valuable support to the local PV industry.

PVINSIGHT - PHOTOVOLTAICS TESTING LABORATORY (PVTL):

The only ISO 17025 accredited PV testing facility in South Africa which offers the following accredited tests:

  • Visual Inspection of the PV module for defects and damage
  • Peak Power measurement
  • Electrical Insulation testing
  • Infrared Thermographic
  • Electroluminescence imaging

The PVTL is operated by the university spin-off company, PVinsight Pty Ltd.
