Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics

Revision of the fundamentals of thermodynamics; thermal, mechanical and chemical interactions; phase transformations of dilute solutions; Gibbs free energy; the partition function; Boltzmann statistics; quantum statistics; Bose-Einstein condensation. Examples covered in the course include paramagnetism, electromagnetic radiation, Debye theory of solids, liquid helium and semiconductor statistics.
